That was Paul's admonition to Timothy and of course, Timothy, first 18 00:01:36.760 --> 00:01:43.040 and second, Timothy speaks to all of us being the word of God, examine yourselves to 19 00:01:43.040 --> 00:01:50.040 determine whether you are in the faith or not. Notice that it's saying that or it's 20 00:01:50.040 --> 00:01:55.400 not saying, examine yourself. In other words, take stock, take your pulse, take 21 00:01:55.400 --> 00:02:01.920 an honest assessment of yourself, of yourself, not not somebody else, yourself to 22 00:02:01.920 --> 00:02:07.560 actually come to the conclusion that you are a true believer. It actually means nothing. And we need to get this under our belt once 26 00:02:26.040 --> 00:02:32.680 and for all, oh, I believe in Jesus means literally nothing because it's always 27 00:02:32.680 --> 00:02:36.760 been true, but it's more needed now more than ever. And that is you have to 28 00:02:36.760 --> 00:02:41.560 define to me, I have to ask you, what do you mean by belief and what do you 29 00:02:41.560 --> 00:02:47.080 mean by Jesus? Who are you talking about? So what I want to just look at right 30 00:02:47.080 --> 00:02:52.600 now, in light of the fact of last time we were talking about, do backsliders go 31 00:02:52.600 --> 00:03:00.800 up in the rapture? For that matter, do backsliders go to heaven? Do only the 32 00:03:00.800 --> 00:03:06.880 pure at the moment of the rapture go up? Are those that are backslidden? Are 33 00:03:06.880 --> 00:03:12.880 they left behind? And then it comes down to the debate, Kenbacks, I've had, I'm 34 00:03:12.880 --> 00:03:22.720 not going to get too much in the details, but I had a pastor say to me one time, I'm 35 00:03:22.720 --> 00:03:27.880 not even sure if backsliders go to heaven at all, that backsliders are in fact 36 00:03:27.880 --> 00:03:37.240 non-believers. And I was shocked to hear that because that person must believe 37 00:03:37.240 --> 00:03:41.560 that they themselves never backslide. You know, what about backslidden? Being 38 00:03:41.560 --> 00:03:45.480 backslidden, you can look perfect, but be backslidden in your heart. To be 39 00:03:45.480 --> 00:03:51.400 backslide, as we talked about last time, go ahead and check it out, is to not be 40 00:03:51.400 --> 00:03:55.080 walking with the Lord and it doesn't even have to be on the outward side. It can be 41 00:03:55.800 --> 00:04:01.480 inward. But today we're going to be talking about the fact of repentance. What role does 42 00:04:01.480 --> 00:04:09.000 repentance play in the life of a real child of God? So there's about three things I want to 43 00:04:09.000 --> 00:04:13.400 look at today and our brief time together. But listen, I'm going to read it to you. This is 44 00:04:13.400 --> 00:04:19.880 coming out of Matthew, chapter three, and we'll start it about verse four. Listen to this carefully 45 00:04:19.880 --> 00:04:26.120 everybody. Now, John himself was clothed with camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist 46 00:04:26.120 --> 00:04:37.000 and his food was locust and wild honey. John was a wild man in looks and in message. 47 00:04:37.960 --> 00:04:42.600 You know, in theological terms, John the Baptist technically was the last Old Testament prophet. 48 00:04:43.560 --> 00:04:50.440 If you think about it, so verse five, then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region around 49 00:04:50.440 --> 00:04:57.240 Jordan went out to him and were baptized by him in the Jordan, that is the Jordan river, 50 00:04:57.240 --> 00:05:05.160 confessing their sins. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and the Sadducees coming to his 51 00:05:05.160 --> 00:05:12.760 baptism, he said to them, brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come. 52 00:05:13.480 --> 00:05:22.280 Therefore, bear fruits worthy of repentance. So that is an awesome declaration. John is preaching 53 00:05:22.920 --> 00:05:29.080 that the kingdom of God is about to arrive. He's going to make that clear as you keep reading in 54 00:05:30.040 --> 00:05:37.400 Matthew chapter three and chapter four. But notice that John's ministry is all based upon 55 00:05:38.760 --> 00:05:44.760 repentance. And so when the Pharisees and the Sadducees come to even witness, hey, what's 56 00:05:44.760 --> 00:05:50.840 happening? Everybody's going out to see this guy. What is the message he's preaching? John 57 00:05:50.840 --> 00:05:58.600 preached the message of repentance. Okay. And in those days, if you were baptized by John, it meant 58 00:05:58.600 --> 00:06:06.200 this, that you were immersed in the waters of baptism because you were proclaiming that you 59 00:06:06.920 --> 00:06:14.200 identified with his message, which was, I am a sinner and I need repentance. 60 00:06:14.920 --> 00:06:21.880 What's interesting about John's baptism is nowhere in John's baptism doesn't say that he baptized 61 00:06:22.920 --> 00:06:30.280 anyone unto salvation. His baptism was a baptism into you acknowledging me, acknowledging they 62 00:06:30.280 --> 00:06:36.840 acknowledging that they needed salvation. That's why John, while he's in the water, announces there's 63 00:06:36.840 --> 00:06:45.400 one coming whose sandals, the straps of his sandals, I'm not even worthy to tie. He's the one. 64 00:06:45.960 --> 00:06:55.560 So John was that forerunner that preceded the public ministry of Jesus, fulfilling, in fact, 65 00:06:55.560 --> 00:07:03.240 Jesus put it this way. Jesus said to the disciples, if you can receive this, if you guys were thinking, 66 00:07:03.320 --> 00:07:10.680 if you are understanding my first coming versus the second coming, if you can get this, it is true 67 00:07:11.880 --> 00:07:17.320 that Elijah must come first before the kingdom is established. But if you can receive this, 68 00:07:18.520 --> 00:07:28.520 John is ministering in the spirit of Elijah. That's important. So Christ was coming to first 69 00:07:28.520 --> 00:07:35.960 deal with sin and Christ's second coming is to establish his government. That's the second coming. 70 00:07:36.840 --> 00:07:44.360 So regarding this doctrine or preaching or teaching of repentance, this is absolutely essential 71 00:07:45.080 --> 00:07:52.040 for salvation. You cannot have, listen, you cannot be going to heaven, you cannot have salvation, 72 00:07:52.200 --> 00:08:02.200 you cannot have a relationship with God unless you understand what repentance is. Listen, did you know that the good news, that is the evangelical, the gospel? 75 00:08:18.200 --> 00:08:25.400 Did you know that there must, there must, in theological, biblical terms, 76 00:08:26.600 --> 00:08:38.120 there must be a preceding or an advance announcement to the gospel. What is the gospel? Metanoia, change your mind, repent, change your mind. Think about God or Jesus 85 00:09:44.520 --> 00:09:49.000 Christ again. Here's another words we would say today. Hey, you've heard about Jesus? The Bible says that the the just shall live by faith. But I haven't mentioned the word 89 00:10:15.240 --> 00:10:23.560 faith yet. The just shall live by faith. Abraham was justified. And in this moment is the moment that you 104 00:12:15.640 --> 00:12:25.080 profess belief in Christ. And then I would push the car along the way. Okay. Well, we're not really sure yet to be honest with you. We're happy that you made 137 00:16:14.680 --> 00:16:22.600 this commitment, but we all know that over time, time will tell. A believer will produce fruit.
