The heart is an absolutely remarkable machine. 23 00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:11.000 I like what CS Lewis says. He says that the human machine is the human 24 00:02:11.000 --> 00:02:20.000 himself. We have a machine. We have a biological machine that is a machine that is 25 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:29.000 running off of an electrical impulse. The heart is doing what it's doing. And when 26 00:02:29.000 --> 00:02:39.000 we look at a heart, when we, you know, pull a heart out of the chest, they're 27 00:02:39.000 --> 00:02:47.000 all the same, human hearts. You can tell some hearts maybe with age or with 28 00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:52.000 abuse that they might have some anomalies to them. Unlike the lungs, if 29 00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:59.000 somebody is a smoker, right? It's bad. I've seen that in my previous career 30 00:02:59.000 --> 00:03:07.000 before starting this, this church. That's I handled. I got to see touch human 31 00:03:07.000 --> 00:03:11.000 lungs, a healthy lung, smokers lung. I tell you what, man, you want to have people 32 00:03:11.000 --> 00:03:17.000 not smoke? Show them a smoker's lung and they won't smoke. I say all that to say 33 00:03:17.000 --> 00:03:23.000 that people get heart transplants. We just, we just had a little baby at our 34 00:03:23.000 --> 00:03:29.000 church three weeks old. Got a brand new heart. Three baby was three weeks old. 35 00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:34.000 You know what happened? A three week old baby had to die for that baby 36 00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:40.000 here on at the church to get a brand new heart. And so the heart is a miraculous 37 00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:47.000 machine. But the Bible tells us in Jeremiah 17 verse 9. I'll read it to you. 38 00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:53.000 The Bible says the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked 39 00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:59.000 who can know it. Why are we bringing this up right now is because, listen carefully, 40 00:03:59.000 --> 00:04:02.000 this is going to cause a little bit of controversy. I want you to think it through 41 00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:10.000 though. The Bible says man's heart is deceitfully wicked. Jesus said in the 42 00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:15.000 New Testament that he never committed himself to man because he knew what was 43 00:04:15.000 --> 00:04:22.000 inside man. What was that? He was referring to. He was referring to man's 44 00:04:22.000 --> 00:04:30.000 wicked deceitful heart. And it is naive for us to say as Christians. 45 00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:38.000 That thing got I have a new heart. I got a heart transplant. When I accepted 46 00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:42.000 Jesus, he gave me a new heart. So my heart's not desperately wicked. My heart's 47 00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:49.000 not deceitful. Yes, it is. And so is mine. Let me explain. When we were born 48 00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:53.000 again, we were given a brand new heart meaning that our heart was made alive 49 00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:59.000 spiritually speaking. Our heart is made new. Now when you said yes to Jesus, 50 00:04:59.000 --> 00:05:03.000 you repented of your sins. You said yes to Jesus Christ. Your chest didn't open 51 00:05:03.000 --> 00:05:07.000 up and a new heart was put inside and it was stitched up in a second. No, no, no, 52 00:05:07.000 --> 00:05:12.000 no. You were given a new heart meaning that you were under now the new control 53 00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:18.000 of the Holy Spirit previously. You were not in control at all. You were subject 54 00:05:18.000 --> 00:05:24.000 to the demands of a wicked and cruel and deceitful heart. But now that you're 55 00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:30.000 born again, that deceitfulness is in us, but it's no longer controlling us because 56 00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:34.000 when we have a new heart, look at it this way, we have a heart that now goes to 57 00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:40.000 war. We have a heart that now fights against evil. But here's the point that I 58 00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:46.000 want to make in our brief time together. Why is it that Christians still talk in 59 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:54.000 this carnal sense of sane? Well, I felt in my heart that it was the right thing 60 00:05:54.000 --> 00:06:00.000 to do. That is the dumbest thing to say as a Christian. If you're not a Christian, 61 00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:06.000 go ahead and keep saying it. But when the Christian says, you know, I just felt 62 00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:18.000 in my heart, or I'll just follow my heart on that decision. What in the world 63 00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:23.000 are you talking about? No where in the Bible does this say follow your heart. 64 00:06:23.000 --> 00:06:28.000 No where in the Bible says that make your decision based on your feeling. 65 00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:33.000 You're you are going to crash and burn. I don't mean burn. If you're Christian 66 00:06:33.000 --> 00:06:37.000 and you're living like this, you're going to crash and you're going to be all 67 00:06:37.000 --> 00:06:41.000 dinged up and then you're going to crash again. You're going to bounce off the 68 00:06:41.000 --> 00:06:45.000 guardrails and you're going to flip the car so to speak because why? You're living 69 00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:51.000 your life off of emotion because the heart is also the seat of the emotions. 70 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:56.000 And so Jesus said it this way. He said watch out because out of the heart the mouth 71 00:06:56.000 --> 00:07:01.000 speaks. So if we had a new heart, we wouldn't have to watch out, right? 72 00:07:01.000 --> 00:07:05.000 Because we would automatically speak the right thing. We would automatically 73 00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:10.000 be sanctified and we would never have to worry about persevering in the faith 74 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:16.000 and exercising ourself into godliness and fighting against evil and 75 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:21.000 rebuking the old man of ourself. Are you getting the picture? 76 00:07:21.000 --> 00:07:27.000 We are still sinners. You and I born again. We're going to heaven. 77 00:07:27.000 --> 00:07:31.000 But we're still locked in this body and we still have our sin nature. 78 00:07:31.000 --> 00:07:35.000 If you had a new heart, the way that some people are thinking, 79 00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:39.000 then you would no longer have a sin nature. Well guess what? Paul the Apostle 80 00:07:39.000 --> 00:07:44.000 made it very clear in the book of Romans chapter 7 that he was a man who knew 81 00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:50.000 the truth, but he was subject to the demands of his sins. 82 00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:54.000 And he would struggle back and forth. Paul the Apostle in Romans chapter 7 is 83 00:07:55.000 --> 00:08:01.000 not talking about Paul before he got saved. He's talking about Paul after he got 84 00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:06.000 saved. Paul didn't have a struggle before he got saved. Paul did whatever he wanted. 85 00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:13.000 But when he got saved, he discovered Romans chapter 7 that he is this convoluted 86 00:08:13.000 --> 00:08:23.000 mess of emotional, spiritual drama. I know to do well. He says to do the right 87 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:27.000 thing. I know I should do it. But what do I wind up doing? I wind up doing the 88 00:08:27.000 --> 00:08:34.000 bad thing. And then he says the thing that I know that I should do. I don't. 89 00:08:34.000 --> 00:08:37.000 The thing is that I know I should not do. That's the thing I do. 90 00:08:37.000 --> 00:08:44.000 And he gives this incredible almost at times convoluted description of what it 91 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:51.000 is to be a believer. Translation, war, war, war is what you and I are engaged 92 00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:56.000 in regarding our individual selves. Why? Because our hearts are desperately wicked 93 00:08:56.000 --> 00:09:03.000 and we can't know them. So if you watch some show podcast, read a book and it says 94 00:09:03.000 --> 00:09:11.000 that you are so amazing, you're so spectacular, you're fantastic. And there's so many 95 00:09:11.000 --> 00:09:17.000 possibilities for you. They're endless. And look, I'm not knocking those things. 96 00:09:17.000 --> 00:09:23.000 But all things are possible with Christ. All things are possible in God. 97 00:09:23.000 --> 00:09:30.000 But when somebody says, you know, follow your hearts, it's going to go great. 98 00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:39.000 I think I could sum up what Satan said to Eve in the Garden of Eden in that 99 00:09:39.000 --> 00:09:45.000 little dialogue there. Read about it. I think I can sum it up like this. 100 00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:52.000 Because Satan said to Eve, follow your heart. Now she had not yet fallen, right? 101 00:09:52.000 --> 00:10:00.000 She was not yet a sinner. By the way, isn't it interesting? 102 00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:06.000 When did Eve sin? That's a great theological question, right? 103 00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:14.000 When did Eve commit sin? I'm going to pause right now. Fill in the blank. 104 00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:27.000 The question is, when did Eve sin? The answer is before she ate the fruit. 105 00:10:27.000 --> 00:10:31.000 She'll wait a minute. Doesn't the Bible say in the day that you eat the fruit? 106 00:10:31.000 --> 00:10:37.000 You will die. Yes, of course it does. And it's true. 107 00:10:37.000 --> 00:10:42.000 But at some point before she bit into the fruit, she picked the fruit. 108 00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:47.000 Before she picked the fruit, she decided to pick it. 109 00:10:47.000 --> 00:10:53.000 Before she decided to pick it, she said yes to the temptation. 110 00:10:53.000 --> 00:11:00.000 The moment she said yes to the temptation, she sinned. It kind of goes like this. 111 00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:05.000 When is a horse thief? A horse thief. 112 00:11:05.000 --> 00:11:12.000 Is it after he steals the horse? Or is it before he steals the horse? 113 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:21.000 The law would say, because the law has no emotion, the law has no insight, the law has no omniscience. 114 00:11:21.000 --> 00:11:27.000 The law would say, as soon as the guy drives away with that horse, we got him. 115 00:11:27.000 --> 00:11:31.000 We'll nab him. Of course, that's how the law thinks. 116 00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:38.000 Remember, the law says you shall not commit adultery, right? 117 00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:43.000 So according to the law, if you don't do it, you're not guilty of it. 118 00:11:43.000 --> 00:11:50.000 What does Jesus say? Jesus says, you have heard that it has been said you shall not commit adultery. 119 00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:55.000 He quoted the law, Moses. He agrees with Moses. 120 00:11:55.000 --> 00:12:01.000 Jesus says, I tell you what, if you look at somebody and lust for them, you've committed adultery. 121 00:12:01.000 --> 00:12:07.000 Where did that come from? Because Jesus interpreted the spirit of the law. 122 00:12:07.000 --> 00:12:11.000 Here's the answer to the horse question. 123 00:12:11.000 --> 00:12:18.000 The reason why someone steals a horse is because there are a horse thief. 124 00:12:18.000 --> 00:12:24.000 There are horse thief, so they make plans to steal the horse. 125 00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:26.000 Makes sense? 126 00:12:26.000 --> 00:12:32.000 So Eve sinned when she said, I'm going to sin. 127 00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:38.000 I'm going to listen to this snake. I'm going to do it. 128 00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:42.000 And I'm going to pick it myself. I'm going to eat it. 129 00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:45.000 And then I'm going to find my husband, chase him down. 130 00:12:45.000 --> 00:12:48.000 And I'm going to make him eat it. 131 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:56.000 And the human heart has been deceitfully wicked ever since we succumbed to temptation. 132 00:12:56.000 --> 00:13:00.000 You don't have to be arrested for murdering somebody, Jesus said. 133 00:13:00.000 --> 00:13:04.000 All you have to do is hate them and you're guilty of murder. 134 00:13:04.000 --> 00:13:10.000 Wow. So let's make sure we get away from this one, people. 135 00:13:10.000 --> 00:13:13.000 Let's stop listening to our heart. 136 00:13:13.000 --> 00:13:16.000 Let's stop listening to our feelings. We have to govern them. 137 00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:20.000 We have to control them through the word of God, the authority of the Bible. 138 00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:28.000 So when someone says, I know the Bible says that I shouldn't cheat on my wife. 139 00:13:28.000 --> 00:13:31.000 But my wife hasn't been very nice to me lately. 140 00:13:31.000 --> 00:13:33.000 And I know God wants me happy. 141 00:13:33.000 --> 00:13:39.000 And I think the secretary down the hallway, I think she'll make me happy. 142 00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:43.000 So after all, God wants me happy, right? 143 00:13:43.000 --> 00:13:45.000 That's what my heart says. 144 00:13:45.000 --> 00:13:48.000 Okay, you're self deceived. 145 00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:54.000 And you are, I'm trying to think of a nice word, but you don't know God. 146 00:13:54.000 --> 00:13:59.000 I mean, read first John, read second John, first and second John. 147 00:13:59.000 --> 00:14:03.000 You can't know God and do that. 148 00:14:03.000 --> 00:14:07.000 And the reason why you do that is because your heart is desperately wicked 149 00:14:07.000 --> 00:14:09.000 and deceitful. 150 00:14:09.000 --> 00:14:15.000 And I battle with my heart because my heart will still think of things like that. 151 00:14:15.000 --> 00:14:19.000 And I've got to say, hey, what are you doing? 152 00:14:19.000 --> 00:14:22.000 Lord, I ask you to forgive me of those thoughts. 153 00:14:22.000 --> 00:14:27.000 I ask you, Lord, to help me now, to rebuke those thoughts. 154 00:14:27.000 --> 00:14:30.000 I bring that thought under the captivity of Jesus Christ. 155 00:14:30.000 --> 00:14:35.000 And Lord, I'm going to get right back up and get back on the path. 156 00:14:35.000 --> 00:14:37.000 And walk with you now. 157 00:14:37.000 --> 00:14:43.000 And you do that every day until you drop dead or the rapture happens. 158 00:14:43.000 --> 00:14:53.000 But don't follow your heart because your heart is deceitfully above all things. 159 00:14:53.000 --> 00:14:56.000 Tricky. 160 00:14:56.000 --> 00:14:59.000 And it's wicked. 161 00:14:59.000 --> 00:15:02.000 No wonder why Jesus came to redeem us. 162 00:15:02.000 --> 00:15:05.000 Having died on the cross for our sins according to the Scriptures. 163 00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:10.000 Jesus rose again from the dead according to the Scriptures. 164 00:15:10.000 --> 00:15:15.000 And he ascended back to heaven to be our great high priest at the end of Cessar. 165 00:15:15.000 --> 00:15:17.000 And I love this. 166 00:15:17.000 --> 00:15:19.000 The Bible tells us that he's our advocate. 167 00:15:19.000 --> 00:15:21.000 That's another name for an attorney. 168 00:15:21.000 --> 00:15:26.000 Every time you and I say, Lord Jesus, forgive me, 169 00:15:26.000 --> 00:15:28.000 it was wrong for me to do that. 170 00:15:28.000 --> 00:15:31.000 I confess my sins. 171 00:15:31.000 --> 00:15:35.000 Our attorney leans over to the Father and says, 172 00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:39.000 I just took care of that argument regarding my child. 173 00:15:39.000 --> 00:15:43.000 And the Father says about it. 174 00:15:43.000 --> 00:15:52.000 Thank you, son, for being the intercessor, the mediator, the advocate, the atonement. 175 00:15:52.000 --> 00:15:54.000 And so you think about that stuff. 176 00:15:54.000 --> 00:15:55.000 Stay clear, friends. 177 00:15:55.000 --> 00:15:56.000 Stay clear. 178 00:15:56.000 --> 00:15:58.000 Watch out for those who say, we're good. 179 00:15:58.000 --> 00:15:59.000 We're born good. 180 00:15:59.000 --> 00:16:00.000 We're naturally good. 181 00:16:00.000 --> 00:16:04.000 Man's heart is basically good. 182 00:16:04.000 --> 00:16:11.000 He always knows someone is not telling the truth when they say, you know, man's heart's basically good. 183 00:16:11.000 --> 00:16:13.000 That's an indicator. 184 00:16:13.000 --> 00:16:17.000 I think you know what I mean. 185 00:16:17.000 --> 00:16:23.000 So let's stick to the word and let's not wonder what our hearts are feeling. 186 00:16:23.000 --> 00:16:25.000 God bless you guys.
